How to Smash it in Every Area of Your Life – 3 Tips for Busy Executives

If you are a senior exec, the chances you already have a strong track record and are an expert in achieving results in your professional life.

But this often comes at a cost.

Work can easily take centre stage and eclipse other areas like family, friends, mental and physical health — and good old fun.

You may find yourself feeling increasingly sluggish, frustrated, grumpy and impatient.  Your family often gets the worst of you.

You know you need to change but you have lost count of the number of times you have made a vow to get fit, get healthy and change your attitude.

You’re running at max capacity and your reserves are so depleted, you could easily be tipped over the edge should a real crisis comes, like family sickness or bereavement.

Whatever your state right now, I am here to give you hope that it is possible to be victorious in every area of your life.

Follow these three tips to start the journey towards a whole life where you have energy, feel good about yourself and can sustain an incredible career over the long haul.

Exec Life Tip 1 – Get a vision for every area of your life.

For this, I like the Wheel of Life example below.  Start by scoring out of ten how fulfilled you currently feel in each of the segments.  This gives you an idea of where you are at now.

Until you stare at the reality of your situation in the face, you don’t know what to change.

Then, for each piece of the wheel, ask yourself, What would this area of life look like if it was 9 out of 10?

Forget about how you would achieve it for now, and just imagine what the best would be.

There is your vision.

Exec Life Tip 2 – Define the 2.0 Version of yourself.

The 2.0 Version is the next level for you that will fulfil the vision.

What would you be thinking?  Feeling?  Saying?  What characteristics would you be showing?

Would you be bolder, more present, more considerate, more fun?

The more you can imagine your future self, the easier it will be to step into it.

Exec Life Tip 3 – Only set goals that thrill you.

It is highly likely you are a machine at setting and achieving goals for your career.  But when it comes to your personal life, things just fall apart.

For this reason, I only allow my clients to set goals that genuinely excite them.  Anything less than a 9 out of 10 is a no-go.

If you struggle to set thrilling goals, you need to go back to Tip 1 and envision a future that you genuinely desire.

In my experience, desire and passion are the most effective motivators of long-term change.

If you are not eager to start a daily gym habit, find a different way to get fit. For example, compete in a Tough Mudder or getting a dog that you have to walk daily (my latest goal!), or get your buddies out for a significant hike every three months.

Only set goals that fire you up, so you naturally take action on them.

How Julian revitalised his life outside of work

When Julian came to me, he was a successful CEO of a medium-sized UK charity.  He was writing a book, influencing public legislation and bringing radical cultural change in public safety.

He was smashing it professionally.

However, Julian was grieving the loss of both his parents, had moved to a new area so lacked friendship, rarely exercised, ate a lot of hotel food, and wondered how he could stay ‘on course’ without getting exhausted by all his professional success.

Julian found the Wheel of Life a transformational tool and was amazed at what he could achieve over just a few months.

He joined a local Health and Country Club, set aside monthly Refocus Days and found some accountability partners to give him a safe place to talk openly about his key challenges.

He is now much fitter, feels more healthy, has created more time to invest in friendships, is much more present in his family and enjoys his weekends.

He has achieved this whilst also continuing to progress his professional career, where he is now producing a TV series to go with his latest book.

When it’s time to restore the bits of your life that have gone haywire

If its time to redress the imbalance in your life, remember these three tips to get you moving in the right direction:

  • Cast vision for every sphere of your life by stepping back, assessing the reality of your current situation and envisioning what you want (without worrying about the how).
  • Define the 2.0 Version of yourself that you get to become to fulfil the vision.
  • Only set goals that genuinely thrill you.

With this intentionality, your mind automatically starts adjusting to your desired future and future self, and before you know it, you will find the fruits beginning to show.

Has your life got a bit out of whack?  Do the repercussions seem overwhelming?  Are you struggling to know where to start?
