How to make a big brave career move successfully.
What big brave career move have you been longing to make? Does the mention of it churn you up? Perhaps you feel a mixture of excitement and fear.
Maybe you have already tried to take the leap and are still nursing your wounds from the fallout. Perhaps it seems impossible, and you have simply resigned yourself to the daily trudge.
Big brave career moves look different for everyone.
For some, it is taking that leap to the next level; for others, it’s changing careers altogether. For many, it’s daring to start that business that has been in your heart for decades. For others, it’s simply finding the confidence to return to the workplace after raising kids.
Whatever courageous career step you would like to make, I am here to tell you that it IS possible, and you can do it SUCCESSFULLY.
How do I know?
Because I have worked with hundreds of people in your position.
Many times, people came to me feeling a growing frustration and a gnawing in their souls that was eroding their confidence.
But….through four straightforward steps, they found a way to make the changes they could have once only dreamed of!
Take my client Stephanie Brobbey.
When Stephanie came to me for coaching, she was a qualified solicitor, working in the private client team in a top London law firm.
Stephanie was on track to becoming a partner in the firm, and being under 35, this is a highly prized achievement. But deep inside, she began wondering whether this was what she wanted. The more she questioned it, the more stuck it made her feel because she didn’t know where to start to find an alternative path.
“I was overwhelmed, and it made me panic,” says Stephanie.
Stephanie threw herself into my coaching programme, and this is what she has to say:
“Three years later, I am no longer a practising lawyer, and I am thrilled! I have done something I never thought I would do – set up and run my own business, and I love it. It is a considerable achievement.”
In this article, I want to offer you the same four powerful steps you can take to make a big brave career move successfully.
STEP ONE: Start with filling your passion pot.
Your passion is the fuel that will keep you going, whatever obstacles get in your way.
Knowing what or who you love, regardless of whether it will make you money, is essential because it connects you with your why.
Your passion will enable you to go further and higher than you thought possible for the things you love the most. It’s the best motivator on the planet!
STEP TWO: Now, get clear about your purpose.
Your purpose is your true north and the guiding compass that will keep you on track no matter what happens.
It will enable you to push through any pain. Think of a pregnant mother who goes through hours of labour for her baby.
Here you want to immerse yourself in the future you dream of so you can imagine yourself there.
The more engaged you are with your vision, and the more you believe it, the more you will attract it into your life.
Mark my words; circumstances will start to bow to what you want.
STEP THREE: Now, you can start on the plan.
Your plan is the how.
But don’t start working on the how till you have the what.
If you have invested heavily in the first two steps, you will have your what.
If what you want is not crystal clear, your plan is compromised, and you are more likely to shrink back into the comfortable when the going gets tough.
STEP FOUR: It’s time to pursue!
If you follow the first three steps thoroughly, with passion, a purpose and a plan, the only thing you will want to do is pursue them!
I know that if my clients commit themselves to embrace all four steps, they will be unstoppable.
Going back to Stephanie, she says about her career move:
“I have done it slowly over time, going down to four days a week as part of the transition. Now I live the lifestyle I want to lead. I have autonomy, choosing when and where I work. I am much happier. I had a business meeting in Regent’s Park in the sun at the beginning of September, and I couldn’t believe this was my life!
“I am the founder of The Good Ancestor Movement, a social purpose business that disrupts the mainstream private wealth industry by challenging ideas about the economy, excessive wealth accumulation, tax minimisation and the redistribution of resources and power in society.
“We have a growing list of clients and have already had opportunities to work with vital global influencers.
“The coaching process also revealed insights into my thought patterns, fears and behaviours. I opened up to new possibilities and challenged my thinking. Coaching gave me an understanding that I am a leader.
Without this, I wouldn’t have set something up independently.”
In considering how to make your big brave career move successfully
First, make sure you have filled up your passion pot.
Second, get clear about your purpose.
Third, now that you have fully enrolled in your future, it is time to hatch the plan to get there.
Fourth, with your passion, purpose and plan pots full, you will only want to do one thing – pursue!
